New Collaboration! SITA and the Victoria Regional Pickleball Association are collaborating on a joint letter to the City of Victoria and the District of Saanich with respect to NET HEIGHTS for mixed use courts! While appreciative of the work that went into the “Pickleball Strategy for Victoria, Saanich, Oak Bay and Esquimalt” it would appear that net height was overlooked. A notable difference at a big 2 inches. The ask is to consider implementing an easy to use turnbuckle (or handle) and perhaps a laminated card attached to the nets to point out the velcro-adjustable strap … stay tuned. Letter will be posted once sent.
The Langford Tennis Club https://langfordtennis.bc.tennis.com is actively lobbying local governments (Langford and Colwood) in its efforts to secure a new home. The existing facility is located on the grounds of Royal Roads University; however, these lands are part of a future development. For the time being, the Club is being allowed to continue to operate there.
The Club will be celebrating 100 years in 2025! Saturday, August 9th is the big day to celebrate one of the oldest tennis clubs in Canada. The day begins with a pancake breakfast at 9am and includes a mini jr tournament, a mini mixed doubles wooden racquet tournament and BBQ lunch. Come out and enjoy the day!
Other news for Langford is that the club recently purchased a SpitFire Ball Pro II ball machine.
The Saanich Tennis Club https://saanichtennisclub.org has entered into a licence agreement with the District of Saanich. This means that the District is now fully responsible for all major repairs of the lands, fencing and courts. The Club is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the clubhouse.
As of early June the club remains closed, as the courts have been dug up AGAIN as clay was encountered, so the work restarts. Better to get it right! It is anticipated (weather permitting and we are expecting lots of sunshine!) that the Club will be up and running by mid to late June (fingers crossed) or early July. Membership remains steady but it is suspected that potential members may be holding off pending news of the club re-opening. The Club has reserved courts at other outdoor courts, please refer to the club’s webpage for more information.
The Capital City Tennis Club https://capitalcityclub.ca will be celebrating 25 years in 2026; details of the celebration are in the works and can be found on the Club’s website. The club has been successful in renewing its outdoor court bookings for the spring/summer season. The club holds sessions at Stadacona and Hollywood parks in Victoria as well as Henderson Rec Centre in Oak Bay.
Saanich Parks and Recreation has all but completed work on the lighting and heating systems at Cedar Hill Recreation Centre. The current construction is to improve accessibility and sustainability. Saanich is working with GigaSports to install an online booking system for its indoor courts to replace the phone in system. GigaSports is a Canadian company based in Ontario, it is hoped that the new system is up and running by the Fall of 2025.
The Victoria Tennis Group https://www.victoriatennisgroup.ca has 18 members in its singles tennis ladder. The club continues to grow with membership up to 190.
The South Island Tennis League opened its season on Tuesday, April 29th and will run until June 24th. There are 37 teams registered in levels from 3.5 to Open in the mens’ division. The finale will be held at Henderson Rec Centre on July 5, 2025.
Find everything you need to know to register your team and play in the South Island Tennis League at its website: https://www.sitennisleague.org. Registration for the 2026 season will open mid-February.
Volunteers are needed to ensure the continuation of the South Vancouver Island Tennis League as several of its members are retiring after a very long “career”.
The Victoria Tennis Club‘s https://clubspark.ca/victoriatennisclub membership remains steady at 40 members; the outdoor season is underway with games being played on Sundays at both Banfield and Oaklands parks as well as on Wednesdays at Oaklands.
The Peninsula Tennis Club https://www.peninsulatennisclub.ca/ will be holding celebrations for its 25th anniversary at the North Saanich Yacht club in August. The club had a good turnout for its indoor sessions at Panorama Rec Centre and has now moved outdoors to the courts at Centennial Park. The club has around 100 members.
Oak Bay Recreation and Parks Simon reported that the League is working on an application for a BC Gaming Grant to cover the costs to hold doubles clinics for league participants. The clinics will be held at Oak Bay Rec and are tentatively planned for prior to league start next year. Stay tuned.
